There are three gyms at Whiteaker Middle School. In the two lower gyms the flooring is wood and the walls are painted two shades of blue with a line of orange between the two colors. The colors represent the school colors. There isn’t a lot on the walls besides a few posters of different muscles and the six week grades posted. The uppers gym’s floor is wood as well. In one corner of the room there is a rock wall and in another corner is some gymnastics equipment. On one side of the gym there is cardio and muscular strength machines.
There are three teachers that teach in one school period and each teacher has a gym. There is one storage room down stairs and one storage room upstairs for equipment. One of the lower gyms is a lot bigger than the other lower gym. The larger gym contains bleachers and that is parents and spectator sit during school games. There is a boy’s locker room and a girl’s locker room off of the largest gym. When the students enter the large gym from the locker room they start to walk around the gym counter clockwise. When the P.E. teachers come out they have the students sit in their roll spots where each student sits in a row of six. This is done alphabetically so when taking roll the teacher just look for the missing holes of the rows.
The atmosphere of the gym is at time loud but the students look like they are enjoying their self’s and enjoying the social aspect of physical education. Most of the time everyone participates in the activities and they look like they are having fun doing it. This makes me excited to teach physical education at this grade level because most of the students still enjoy physical education. I think this is the perfect age to teach the students about the benefits of exercising while they still enjoy it. I feel that it is crucial to start the education of physical activity, health, and fitness at an age when the students are still enjoying physical education. This is also a good age to have the students try knew activities before the students get too influenced by feeling stupid or dump about trying a new activity. Games that would be good to start is cooperating games where the point of the games are to get to know each other, working together, problem-solving and supporting each other.

Danielle,
ReplyDeleteA thorough description of your environment for teaching here. It is great to work with students who still have an interest in physical education. How does your environment influence your teaching? Do you only have the gym? Loudness and its impact on teaching? Quality and quantity of the cardio and strength machines? Implications for teaching? What about other resources for this classroom? Nets, balls, etc. Any other potential sports besides the basic basketball and volleyball? Opportunities to be creative with games? How does your classroom/gym/outside limit or create opportunities for your instruction?
Be sure to proofread and/or have someone proofread your Contextual Factors assignment before you turn in a final copy. There are a number of grammatical and spelling errors throughout.
It's great to get your perspective about how this age group might view physical exercise involving games and other activities. I would have assumed that this is an unfortunate time to be learning those things because their bodies are changing and this is about the time insecurity plays a big part. Having a teacher that is passionate about what he/she does is paramount, I think, in order to involve the students. Nice to have your own gym. I'm sure that will positively affect your teaching.
ReplyDeleteI know you are planning on doing a paper/pencil test for your unit. Will you just have the kids sit on the floor and write? You could use the "roll spots" that you described.
ReplyDeleteI'm so impressed that there is a rock wall! Is there a unit utilizing this? I feel like it would really engage kids!
Your attitude towards physical education really inspires me. I feel like a lot of kids really hate PE and its amazing that you aim to teach them life skills about how to be active and healthy.
